Pinch me — is it Q3 already?!
It feels like just last week I was dorkily dishing on my favorite ways to plan for Q2 — and now we’re more than halfway through the year, and it’s time to get yourself set up for another incredible quarter.
I have to admit: It’s been such an amazing few months for me. I’ve been making so many new connections, getting adjusted to life in L.A., trying my hand at the dating scene (definitely a series of stories for another day!), and soaking up all the brilliant creativity of my friends and colleagues out here in the City of Angels.
I’m even taking my first vacation in years — and I’ll be spending the next couple of weeks sipping juices on the beaches of Bali, and totally unplugging. (Woohoo!)
That said, however! You might have heard me say before: down time is always my absolute best planning time.
Yep, that’s right! Between swims and meditations and long walks on the beach, I love to sit down with my planner and map out the my coming quarter.
If you’ve been hanging in the She Takes on the World tribe for a while, you know I adore planning for one big goal every 90 days. I call each 90 day cycle a “sprint”, and it’s a type of planning that’s flexible but focused; simultaneously helping me stay totally clear on my goals, and setting me up with a step-by-step plan to stay on track through every quarter.
I laid out the whole system inside my Conquer Your Year Planner (Which was recently a featured book in Amazon’s brick and mortar locations – how cool is that?). However! If you haven’t had a chance to pick that up yet, I still want to pull back the curtain to reveal a bit more about how I plan things.
Please remember: Not every planning technique is gonna work for everybody. But Conquer Your Year (and this post!) is deliberately structured to give you tons of space to focus on spiritual, health-focused, and fun goals, as well as goals for your work life. There’s a ton of flexibility, so you can plan with purpose… without totally burying yourself under a to-do list.
Here’s how I do it in 4 quick steps:
Step 1: Choose a goal for Q3.
This is your ONE big goal for the next 90 days.
Of course, you can go after more than one goal — but it’s vital that you focus your energy. If your secondary goal doesn’t compliment your first in some way, put it on ice and come back to it next quarter.
I always suggest that whatever goal you set should be attainable, but also something that feels exciting for you to hit. For example, maybe you want to make a certain amount in profit this quarter, or land features on 5 of your dream media outlets, or finally launch a new free offering for your list.
Whatever it is – write it down in your planner, and somewhere you can see it and refer to it all quarter long. This serves to hold you accountable, AND cement the feeling you’re deserving of your dreams.
Step 2: Write down major milestones that will unfold on your road to reaching your goal.
For example, if you decided to launch a new free offering, milestones could include:
- Drafting the freebie
- Sending it to the designer
- Getting final design approval
- Writing your promotional + nurture email sequences
- Launching to your list
Step 3: Do a brain dump of all tasks ahead of you required to reach those milestones.
To continue with the freebie example! You’d need to:
- Decide on content
- Get any necessary research squared away
- Draft your freebie
- Phone in someone to proof and edit your freebie for you
- Send your freebie to your designer
- Get your funnels set up
- Write a landing page
- Write the promotional sequence to get the word out to your list
- Write the nurture sequence clients receive after they buy
- … And more.
Step 4: Once you’re clear on every step above, begin writing them into your planner. Chose 1-3 steps per day, and make sure it all feels really achievable. But this is where the fun part comes in:
As you plan out your days in your calendar, think beyond just tasks you want to complete. How do you want to focus on your health? Do you want to drink a certain amount of water a day, or meditate for 5 minutes each morning or evening, or spend a certain amount of time at the gym?
Set small-but-sturdy goals, and pencil them in among your task list. Then every day, you’ll be crystal clear about what you want to achieve to be a more productive, happy, healthy, awesome version of you for all 3 months.
And that’s it!
I should also add: Q3 is a great time to flip through any previous 90-day sprints you may have completed, or goals you set out to accomplish, so you can celebrate how far you’ve come.
